2014 SPRING UPDATE - April 2014

Over the course of the spring, we will be introducing a new website for the pioneer cemetery.  If you have browsed through the site, you will see that it is a site focused primarily on the restoration of the once neglected cemetery.  In 2008, when we started this project, the cemetery was in terrible shape and many of the stones were actually disappearing into the earth!  Well, thanks to the efforts of the organizers, the community, donors and government grants, the cemetery is now in very good condition, so we can officially state that the restoration is COMPLETE!

Facebook Group for "Honouring Our Ancestors"

Kelly Stephen, the author of the "Honouring our Ancestors" book, has created a group on Facebook.  I encourage you to visit and join his group.

In this group, he shares pictures that he has collected on the people of the area, beyond what was possible to include in his book.  There are some great photos, so go check it out.  The link is below, or you can search Facebook for "Honouring our Ancestors".

St. Margaret's Pioneer Cemetery Restoration

The St. Margaret of Scotland Pioneer Cemetery, located in St. Margaret's, Prince Edward Island, Canada, was officially opened in 1803 and served the residents of eastern PEI until 1897. The first Scottish settlers arrived in the area in 1772.  This hallowed ground, which is now designated a historic site, is one of Prince Edward Island's most interesting and historic burial sites. There are many interesting stories connected to the people who are laid to rest in the pioneer cemetery.

In 2009, a major restoration of the cemetery was initiated by a Volunteer Restoration Committee, who led a fund raising effort and managed the overall restoration.  The once neglected cemetery has been restored, with grave stones being straightened; repaired; and given new footings; in addition, many stones were uncovered and have been restored.  Over the last 2 years, significant landscaping work has been completed and access to the cemetery is very easy, with a view of the ocean recently completed, to restore the cemetery to its original condition.

Most of the gravestone restoration is now complete, but we will continue to use donations for the ongoing maintenance activities of the stones and landscaping.  We would greatly appreciate any support that you can provide to continue these efforts.  Thank you.
